A Little History
Traditional milk tart or melktert for Afrikaans, is an all-time South African classic dessert loved by thousands of South Africans. Interestingly, it originated from the Dutch settlers who arrived in Cape Town, in the 1600’s.
This traditional milk tart dessert recipe can be made for any occasion and has a sweet pastry crust and a creamy filling that’s easy to prepare. It serves 8 and takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to prepare. 30 minutes for prep and 40 minutes to cook.
What you’ll need to make this delicious dessert
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 cup (600 g) white sugar
- 3 egg yolks
- 1 cup (600 g) cake flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 4 cups (250 ml x 4) milk
- 3 egg whites
- 1 tablespoon of cinnamon sugar
How to cook this delicious dessert
- First, preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F). Coat a deep baking dish with some spray and cook cooking spray.
- Add the butter and sugar into a large bowl and mix until smooth. Next, add the egg yolks and beat until light and fluffy. Sift in the baking powder, cake flour and salt, and stir until all the ingredients are well blended, then add the milk and vanilla extract.
- Whip the egg whites to stiff peaks with an electric mixer in a separate bowl. Fold the whipped egg whites into the batter. Pour into your baking dish and sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 165°C (325°F). Continue to bake for another 25 minutes to 30 minutes, or until the center is set. One way to check is when you gently jiggle the milk tart
Serve hot or cold.
