A Little History
Back in the 1800s, William Banting was an obese British undertaker and in 1861 he asked his doctor how he could lose weight. His doctor had come up with a low-carb, high-fat eating plan that also included moderate to high protein levels.
The eating plan was a major success. In fact, it was such a great success that he wrote a public letter describing his successful weight loss. Not long after, the Banting Diet started to grow in popularity across Britain, and eventually abroad.
The current version of the Banting Diet originates a little closer to home. Tim Noakes, a scientist from South Africa, wrote a book called “The Real Meal Revolution.” The Banting Diet we use today is a result of that book.

- 4 Cups grated courgettes

- ½ Lemon
- 2 Tablespoons of olive oil

- ½ Tablespoon fresh basil
How to cook The Banting Burger With Feta
- Chop up the basil, garlic, mint, onion, and parsley finely.
- Grate the cheddar cheese and crumble the feta
Beef Patties
- First, mix all the patty ingredients together. Then divide into palm sized balls and flatten gently and place them in the fridge for about 30 minutes to firm up.
- In a pan add 1 – 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Fry the patties for 3 to 5 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through.
Avocado Topping
- Roughly mash the 2 avocados with a fork and add the remaining ingredients. Set aside for now.
Rostis
- In a frying pan over a medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil and soften the onions for 5 minutes. Remove and set aside for now. Next, mix the courgette ingredients together and leave to drain over a sieve for a few minutes, and gently squeeze out any excess juice that remain.
- Take your mixture and roll them into palm sized balls and flatten carefully until they’re at least the same size as the beef patties.
- In a frying pan add 1 – 2 tablespoons of olive oil and fry the rostis for 2 – 3 minutes on each side or until golden and cooked through. Be extremely careful as there is no flour to bind the mixture together, so take care when frying and turning.
- Drain the rostis on kitchen paper and assemble the burgers. Just put the patty on a rosti and add the avocado on top and enjoy. Serve immediately.
